Camping and hiking in bushfire risk areas

If you are planning to go hiking or camping in high bushfire risk areas, remember there may be no safe refuge if there is a bushfire.

If caught by fire, seek refuge in a solid building. If there is no building available, use any structure or natural feature that may block radiant heat. Avoid seeking refuge where there are trees, shrubs, long grass or leaves.

• Carry a portable AM/FM radio and listen for information about fires from ABC local radio
• If there is any smoke in the area or you hear about a fire burning in the area, it is best to move out of the area immediately and seek further information.

Remember, you are very vulnerable if you are caught in the open with fire around you!
