Rock climbing, abseiling and caving
Victoria is a great place to climb. Mt Arapiles, 340 kilometres north-west of Melbourne, is recognised as one of the world’s best climbing areas, offering more than 2,000 routes with something to suit climbers of any ability. The nearby Grampians features dozens of cliffs and crags to explore.
Caving
The best caving in the state can be found in the Buchan Cave Reserve in the Snowy Mountains, and at the Princess Margaret Rose Cave outside Nelson (past Portland) along the Great Ocean Road.
Abseiling
Abseiling offers you access to remote areas and spectacular views. The Gorge at Mount Buffalo is an exciting spot for abseiling and has some great harder climbs in the alpine setting.

Get the right gear
Little Bourke Street in Melbourne's city centre is home to outdoor stores. If you need to get gear and guidebooks, this is a good place to do it. The staff at these stores are all outdoor enthusiasts, and are well qualified to hook you up with the right ropes, harnesses, shoes and other gear.
Go with a qualified instructor
If you're trying climbing and caving for the first time, a number of companies operate introductory classes to teach you the basic skills. There are lots of indoor climbing centres in Victoria, which are great places to practice before you head outdoors.
