Trentham
Your visit to Daylesford and the Macedon Ranges won't be complete without a trip to the magnificent, lush Trentham Falls. You'll be rewarded with a stop at the historic township of Trentham, a small town with gold, timber, farming and even manufacturing in its past.
Historic refreshments
As you'll discover during your stay in the region, even the smallest of towns place great emphasis on high-quality eating and drinking. Tiny Trentham punches well above its weight, led by Red Beard Bakery, which turns out excellent sourdough breads and pizzas in the 120-year-old scotch oven. Sit back and enjoy a coffee and admire your surrounds.
If you're looking for edible souvenirs, pick up provisions at Kyldara Heritage Herbs (organic) and Nutty Orchard. You'll see many olive groves on your travels through the region, and Wallaby Creek Olive Grove offers on-site tastings of olive products.
Black gold
There's a good chance you'll spot some beautiful spaniels while you're exploring Trentham. These are Aussie Truffle Dogs field spaniels, bred to help those with spore-inoculated hazelnut and oak trees know when they've struck gold – of the black and very pungent variety. The truffles are quickly packed away, but you might be lucky and get to spend time patting the pups.
Back to nature
Located on the Great Dividing Range, Trentham's main claim to fame is the magical Trentham Falls, Victoria's highest single-drop waterfall. Take a picnic and enjoy it by the river, and if you're a hiker you're bound to appreciate the quality and number of walking tracks in the surrounding forest. For impressive and panoramic views of Mount Macedon, the You Yangs and the Dandenong Ranges drive to Blue Mount or McLaughlins lookouts in Wombat State Forest, or explore by foot or on horseback.
