Fern Gully Nature Walk
Tarra Bulga National Park
Length: 3 kilometres
Walk: 1 hour
Track: Good
Grade: Moderate
Start: Visitor Centre, Balook
Finish: Visitor Centre, Balook
Nearby: Yarram/Traralgon.
Wander under a canopy of giant mountain ash that probably predates the first European visits to Australian shores, past the mossy trunks and gnarled roots of the even older myrtle beech, among the unfurling fronds and perfect radial symmetry of huge tree ferns. For a unique aerial view of the fern gully, stand on Corrigan’s Bridge, a replica of the original suspension bridge moved here from near Yarram in 1938. Watch for lyrebirds drinking and playing in the sparkling waters of Lyrebird Pool, and listen as their amazing feats of mimicry ring out across the forest.
The Visitor Centre is open 10am-4pm, weekends and holidays.
