The traditional home of the Wurundjeri people, Melton was settled by Europeans in 1837. By 1839 Melton was proclaimed a postal village and provided a popular stopover for travellers en route to the Ballarat goldfields.
Since the 1850s Melton has been the home to thoroughbred breeders, racing identities and horse studs.
