Mt William lies near Mafeking, which was the scene of Victoria’s last, and perhaps shortest, gold rush. The tall peak, at 1,168 metres, offers great panoramic views of the entire district as well as an insight into its fascinating local sub-alpine vegetation.
As you drive up to the starting point for this enjoyable walk, note how the vegetation changes as you gain altitude. Sturdy trees on the valley floor slowly give way to snow gums and finally, on the peak itself, to stunted sub-alpine trees. This area was affected by fires in January 2006. As you walk to the summit marvel at mother nature's ability to recover. The walk offers wonderful views across the park and from the summit, expansive views of the surrounding plains.
Note: The weather can change suddenly on the mountain, even in summer, so be prepared and take warm clothing.
